Software is simply instructions that direct your computer to perform specific operations. Software can be divided into two main categories: systems software and applications software. Systems software includes the operating system and utilities that make the computer function, while applications software includes programs that do the work for users. Software is loaded to computers storage, so the computer can execute the software. In order to operate software, the user must have a software license. VMware vSphere is a hybrid solution, providing both the operating system that runs directly on the server hardware (the hypervisor). This allows Virtual Servers to also use the hardware more or less directly, allowing multiple virtual servers to utilize the same physical hardware.
